Honesty of Materials
My goal was to study a brand’s design language and to then design a product not in the company’s product scope, but within their design language.
I chose Bang & Olufsen because I appreciated their materials philosophy:
“This is how we see it. If it looks like aluminum, it is aluminum. If it looks like leather, it’s authentic leather. If it looks like wood, it’s natural wood. We never mimic materials. We use the properties to make the products what they are—experiences. So not only do they look good, but the materials themselves are selected for functionality, quality, and comfort.”
I gutted a $10 bluetooth mouse, modeled all of the internal components to scale, and built my model to fit the pre-existing components. The components from the original mouse functioned properly inside the new assembly.
